| Overview
Power is a key resource for the development of any
economy. Industries, transportation, and the quality of
life of the citizens of a country are dependent on the
ability of a country to generate power. The capacity of
a country to generate electricity is a measure of its
self reliance and its capacity to sustain its growth,
and development of its vital industries. It was with
this in mind that the Government of India undertook the
initiative to realise the hydroelectric potential of the
country and asked private enterprise to build and
operate hydroelectric power plants in the Himalayan
states in the north of the country. All of these
projects are deep within the Himalayas, on rivers that
are tributaries to the mighty Alaknanda, which itself is
a tributary to the mystical Ganges.   |
